The Surrey School District provides a strong foundation for international students to experience academic success while enjoying a comfortable and healthy Canadian lifestyle. International students are welcome to study in all 101 elementary (Kindergarten - Grade 7) and 20 secondary (Grade 8-12) schools. Schools range in size from less than 100 to more than 1600 students. The school year begins in September and ends in June with short breaks in late December and March. Secondary students generally begin their studies in September but can also begin at the beginning of February in most secondary schools.

Upon arriving in the District, the student’s English language skills are assessed and then a program of studies is designed to meet their academic goals, interests and qualifications. International students are integrated into regular classes and supported by welcoming, professional staff and friendly Canadian students. English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction will be provided as necessary.

Students excel in academics, technology, trades, fine arts and athletic programs. Students are encouraged to participate in a range of courses and activities to provide them with a well-rounded educational experience.

All schools offer counseling services to provide students with academic, career and personal guidance. There are a limited number of international students enrolled in each school. This limit ensures that each student receives the support and services necessary to ensure their educational success.

Students can choose a regular academic program or specialized program such as:

  • International Baccalaureate
  • Advanced Placement
  • Program for Artists, Performers & Athletes
  • French Immersion
  • Montessori
  • Intensive Fine Arts
  • Traditional School
  • Career Preparation
  • Cooperative Education
  • Apprenticeship

Students can choose to participate in a wide variety of extra curricular programs including music, drama, soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, hockey, curling, golf, swimming, tennis, skiing and track and field.

International students who complete all requirements receive a secondary school graduation diploma known as the British Columbia Dogwood Diploma – the same diploma that is awarded to local secondary students. Graduation requirements include the successful completion of an acceptable program of grade 10, 11 and 12 courses. Specific courses require provincial exams in addition to school exams in order to receive credit for the course/graduation. A complete outline of graduation requirements is available on the B.C. Ministry of Education website http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/graduation.

The Surrey School District also offers comprehensive adult ESL programs and summer school courses.

    Keeping Learners at the Centre

The Surrey School District is the largest public school district in British Columbia, Canada. It is the ideal place to achieve your academic goals while experiencing a true Canadian lifestyle.

The Surrey School District provides educational services to students residing in the communities of Surrey and White Rock. Surrey, “the City of Parks” has six distinct town centers offering students the choice of studying in peaceful rural surroundings or safe suburban neighbourhoods. The City of White Rock is a tranquil oceanside community clustered around a spectacular sandy beach.

Surrey and White Rock are friendly and family oriented communities – the ideal environment for an international student. Within minutes, rapid public transit links Surrey to downtown Vancouver allowing students to enjoy the benefits of nearby urban centres.

Warm summers and mild winters provide students with an opportunity to enjoy outdoor recreational activities such as tennis, golf, cycling and hiking throughout the year. Due to the proximity of mountains, oceans and lakes, skiing, snowboarding, sailing, swimming and fishing are also popular.
