Laptop Program

At St. George’s School we believe that computer technology can play a central role in increasing student achievement. With this goal in mind, the present school year marks the beginning of our full-school laptop program. Students from grades 7 to 11 now each have a Dell Latitude D420 laptop for use at school and at home.

Students have access to a wide variety of software, including Microsoft Office, Open Office, Macromedia Studio, Visual Studio and dozens more applications. The laptops are Windows-based, but the school can assist and in fact encourages students to install alternate operating systems (such as Linux). Furthermore, the availability of Apple computers in the school implies that students can become comfortable with the use of different operating systems. Familiarity with the above will provide adequate preparation for further academic studies and evolving requirements of the workplace.

In addition to the courses offered by the Computer Science Department, computer technology will be integrated throughout the curriculum. Activities such as the creation of wikis, podcasts, blogs, video projects, online conferencing and Web sites can take place in classes offered by all departments in every grade. eLearning initiatives will be developed over time, as will the production and availability of eBooks. Student laptops are complemented with peripherals such as digital photo and video cameras, scanners and color laser printers.

In preparation for all these exciting projects, every classroom in the school has been equipped with a permanently mounted projector. Teachers can use these to present online material, PowerPoint presentations and better accommodate the visual learners in the school. Students can also access the projectors to present their work to teachers and classmates.

These wonderful tools are enhancing and revolutionizing teaching. It is safe to say that learning can now take place anywhere and anytime at St. George’s School of Montreal.
