Choose a study pathway

Start with the qualification and skills you want to gain. Compare the subject, teaching language, delivery format and location before choosing an institution.

University, college, vocational, secondary and language programs serve different goals. A familiar school name does not establish whether a particular campus or program fits your project.

  1. Write down your goal
  2. Compare at least three programs
  3. Check the institution’s own admission pages

It is possible for students who meet the academic requirements of UNB to be admitted to the Saint John campus without having an official test-of- English score. These students must write the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test upon arrival. This test score will determine their placement in full-time academic courses, ESL support (a combination of ESL and academics), or full-time English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs.

If you have a test-of-English score, the following outlines our minimum requirements:
• Minimum TOEFL requirement is 550/213/iBT 80, or equivalent, for academic study
• With TOEFL scores between 500/173 and 549/212 students may enroll in 2 academic courses and 3 ESL support courses
• With TOEFL scores below 500/173 students will write the CAEL test when they arrive on campus to determine their appropriate level of English language study

Fredericton Campus
• Minimum TOEFL requirement is 580/237/iBT 92*, or equivalent, for academic study
• With TOEFL scores between 540/207 and 579/236 students may enroll in 3 academic courses and 1 ESL support course
• With TOEFL scores below 500/173 students will be asked to write an English language placement test upon arrival at UNB. Scores will determine student’s placement into:
a) full academic study with no restrictions
b) 3 academic courses with one ESL support course, or
c) the Intensive English Language program

(Applicants to the Fredericton campus must submit the results of a recognized English language test before their application will be considered.)
