McMaster marks 5th year of Summer Scholars Program — 12-week fully funded research placements for Ontario students
McMaster marks the fifth year of its Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences Summer Scholars Program (SSP), a competitive, fully funded 12-week placement for Ontario-based students who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or 2SLGBTQIA+. The program pairs a two-week research skills bootcamp with a 10-week lab placement; 40 alumni to date.
The SSP at McMaster provides a 12-week hands-on research experience: a two-week skills bootcamp followed by a 10-week laboratory placement. Fully funded, it covers research-related costs as well as admission, housing, transportation, parking, food and child care. Supported by NexusHealth and the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research (IIDR), the program has graduated 40 scholars; ten alumni are enrolled in medical school (McMaster, Western, Queen’s, Stanford) and eight have begun graduate studies across biochemistry, public health, engineering and related fields. Recent cohorts investigated infectious disease, drug discovery and periconceptional health.
