Indigenous garden and food forest established at Durham College’s Whitby Campus
Durham College is creating an Indigenous garden within its food forest at Whitby Campus; the Indigenous‑led installation began with a ground blessing in May 2026 and supports hands‑on student learning.
Durham College’s Whitby Campus has established an Indigenous garden as part of its food forest, in partnership with the Barrett Centre of Innovation in Sustainable Urban Agriculture. Initiated with a ground blessing in May 2026, the installation features medicinal plants such as sweetgrass and tobacco and draws on Anishinaabe teachings, including the Seven Grandfather Teachings. It functions as a cross‑disciplinary learning site: horticulture students handle planting and harvesting, carpentry students built raised beds and benches, graphic design produced signage and QR elements, and Culinary Management explores culinary uses. A naming ceremony will formally announce the garden’s Anishinaabe name.
