Identify your project's three contacts
Institutions decide admission and academic pathways. Québec handles temporary selection for studies. Federal government processes study permits. The Québec required authorisations page presents this distinction and situations to examine. Start by checking those matching study duration, status and program.
Give each contact a column. Note issued and expected documents. This reveals dependencies: admission may support Québec applications, then Québec attestations may feature in federal applications. Positive answers in one column are not decisions in the other two.
Avoid simply telling family “the application is accepted”. Specify the received decision, date and next actions. Reserve or postpone expenses at appropriate moments and avoid relatives organising travel from still-partial steps.
Examine intake rules before applying
As of October 4, 2026, the Québec application page describes application-number management for affected institutions with caps and exemptions. It concerns vocational, college and university education among other stated details. Check your institution's situation and evidence for any exemption; admission alone does not establish that applications can be received without further checks.
Keep exact program names, levels and institutions in tracking. Similar names may describe different pathways. With several offers, keep separate sheets instead of mixing documents during comparisons. Final decisions must relate to coherent evidence sets.
Ask international services what they can confirm and where official rules are available. Useful answers may indicate procedures or documents instead of guaranteeing decisions. Keep outstanding confirmations visible before paying unrecoverable fees.
Prepare admission and funding information
The Québec documents-to-submit page specifies expected admission details: program, qualification, dates, fees and other relevant elements. Personalised checklists supplement instructions. Documents in languages other than French or English require prescribed translations. Check exact arrangements before ordering services.
Compare letters with the accepted project. Do intake and campus match? Are admission conditions outstanding? Does funding cover the actually chosen program? If information is missing, ask competent school offices how to obtain complete versions. Never add missing details to official letters yourself.
For resources, prepare understandable explanations of availability and origins. Distinguish confirmed sums, documented future payments and still-requested support. Personal budgets and administrative evidence should correspond but are different documents. Budgets show planned expenses; supporting documents explain financing.
Reserve time for the procedure, not only forms
Consulted instructions specify an Arrima account for payment and document submission. They provide for payment within one hour after application submission and fifteen days to submit required documents. Reread arrangements before starting and prepare account access, documents and payment.
Choose a time when avoidable interruptions will not prevent completing steps. Uncertain connections, unavailable cards or documents held elsewhere may complicate procedures started too quickly. Make a short list of essentials at hand, then check everything before opening applications.
After important actions, keep confirmations and associated numbers. Distinguish selected files, attempted payments and confirmed submissions. For technical difficulties, record exact messages and use official help. Screenshots may document problems without proving procedures were received.
Connect the CAQ correctly with the federal file
CAQ issuance attestations support study permit applications and fulfil the prescribed provincial attestation role. IRCC states PAL or TAL exemptions do not automatically exempt applicants from CAQ requirements. Examine both separately, particularly when reading general Canada-wide information.
On receiving attestations, check details before continuing. Then prepare federal lists for your circumstances instead of assuming documents supplied to Québec automatically reached IRCC. Track which document was sent to which authority, when and in which version.
Fictional example: Nour receives her Québec attestation while discussing intake deferral with the school. Before continuing federally, she obtains confirmation of retained timing and changes' effects on documents. She avoids building the second application on uncertain academic circumstances.
Keep alternatives for the intake
Set a date to revisit calendars with institutions. Ask deferral arrangements, next-intake courses and financial consequences. This helps assess feasibility instead of predicting administrative decision dates.
Do likewise for housing and travel. Record committed amounts, recoverable amounts and deadlines changing conditions. Realistic calendars may lead to postponed purchases instead of multiplying provisional reservations. Keep more flexibility for essential expenses.
If someone funds your stay, share calendars. Explain funds needed immediately and those for later periods. Discussions become concrete when everyone sees the chosen program, received decisions and open issues. Also agree who notifies you if promised payment dates change.
Prepare changes once plausible
Institution, level or duration changes may affect procedures. Before committing, gather new-project information and consult applicable renewal or change instructions. Do not reuse old documents solely because printed dates have not expired.
During studies, keep pathway evidence and documents useful for possible renewals. File enrolment certificates, results, interruption authorisations and important exchanges on receipt. Reconstructing several terms much later becomes harder, especially if supporting staff change roles.
Finally, distinguish temporary tracking from possible permanent immigration projects. CAQs concern study stays instead of promising permanent settlement. Consider future pathways while correctly organising today's necessary authorisations. This separation supports solid study decisions and revisiting other possibilities under current rules.
