Environmental Studies Canada - Protecting the Natural World

If you’re interested in working to protect the environment, consider pursuing environmental studies in Canada.

You’ll find Canada an inspiring place to study. With pristine wilderness and landscapes, there are many opportunities to observe natural habitats. Canadians are also strong advocates for the environment. Prominent Canadian environmentalists include Dr. David Suzuki, an award-winning scientist and recipient of the United Nations Environment Medal, and Maurice Strong, the first non-American to win the prestigious U.S. National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal for his leadership on environmental issues.

As well, researchers at post-secondary institutions across the country are advancing our knowledge of the environment. Examples of the innovative projects being tackled by Canadians are:

Standardizing a DNA barcode to help catalogue all living things on the planet and to monitor if a species is at risk (University of Guelph and University of Ottawa).

Harnessing wind to create electricity, by transforming the fluctuating power caused by changes in wind direction and force into a steady electrical current (University of New Brunswick).

Studying the effects of forests on climate change to help manage greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol (University of BC and University of Victoria).

Canada offers an excellent selection of degree, diploma and certificate programs. You might pursue a degree in Environmental Sciences - which takes a scientific approach to the environment - or Environmental Studies, which incorporates broader social and political concerns. You can also take a science degree in a specific discipline such as Biology, Forestry or Earth and Ocean Sciences.

There are also specialized diplomas and certificates. For example, a diploma in Environmental Protection Technology or Co-operative Engineering Technology will prepare you to assess air, soil and water quality. A Diploma of Technology in Environmental Sciences or a certificate in Environmental Technology will provide a foundation in environmental concepts so you can work in a support capacity in the field, office or laboratory.

Some careers in Tourism and Design put ecological knowledge at the forefront. Learn how to plan parks and recreation areas with a degree in Environmental Landscape Design. Prepare for a career in ecotourism through a Bachelor of Applied Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership, or build on your existing degree with a post-graduate certificate or diploma in Ecotourism Management and Adventure Tourism Management.

Find out where you can pursue environmental studies in Canada, and take a step towards helping to preserve our planet.
